The damage claim may also be capped below the value of the item. So treat delivery as part of the price, not an afterthought.
Measure the route before furniture delivery
First, measure the door, the corridor, the staircase and the lift. Ask the seller for the size of the item when assembled and when partly taken apart. A three seater sofa that cannot pass the door is not a bargain. If the seller cannot give you the dimensions, ask them to measure it while you wait.
In Nairobi, also check the gate, the parking space and the distance from the vehicle to the door. In Nakuru, check whether the house has a narrow staircase or a shared entrance. The last ten metres are often the hardest.
Decide between door delivery and a pickup point
Ask the seller or carrier whether the price includes door delivery or a pickup point. Some couriers move parcels between depots and expect you to collect. Karibu Parcels, for example, lists more than 170 pickup points across 38 or more counties. Bolt Send works within a city, with the sender meeting the driver at the kerb rather than at the door.
For a Nairobi to Nakuru furniture move, plan a courier route rather than a same-hour boda. Then ask for the depot address, the collection hours and the identification you need. A pickup point can be cheaper, but you need a vehicle that can carry the item home. Our guide on pickup stations in Kenya covers the hold periods.
Ask what the furniture delivery quote includes
First, get a written quote that separates the base rate from the extras. Ask about packaging, loading, carrying up stairs, waiting time, offloading and assembly. Also ask whether the carrier charges by weight, by volume or by piece.
So compare the total, not the headline. A cheap quote that excludes stairs can cost more than a higher quote that includes everything. If the seller arranges delivery, ask who the carrier is and whether you can speak to them directly.
Understand carrier liability
The Postal and Courier Services Regulations 2025 require licensed operators to file a compensation policy, capped at market value. They also require complaints to be resolved within 14 days. If the outcome is disputed or unanswered, the consumer can escalate to the Communications Authority. The CA acknowledges the complaint and gives the licensee a chance to resolve it in writing. The Communications Authority publishes the licence conditions behind that process.
Read the carrier's own terms as well. Karibu Parcels caps liability at KES 1,500 without extended cover and gives a 15-day claim window. Its terms also state that unclaimed parcels are disposed of after 28 days. Bolt Send's terms state that Bolt is not responsible for loss, theft, damage or misuse of the parcel. The service also excludes goods above KES 15,000. Items larger than 65 by 55 by 40 centimetres, or heavier than 20 kilograms, are refused.
If the furniture is valuable, ask for declared value or extended cover. If the carrier refuses, decide whether the saving is worth the risk. Our guide on lost or damaged parcels in Kenya explains how a claim works after the fact.
Pack for the road
Then wrap the item, protect the corners and bag the screws and fittings. Label the bags with the item name. Also photograph the piece before it is loaded, from every side. Ask the carrier to photograph the load as well. If the item has glass or a mirror, ask for a crate or a double layer of cardboard.
Inspect before you sign
At delivery, first unwrap the item and check the frame, the fabric, the glass and the joints. Look for new scratches, moisture and missing parts. Photograph the damage before you move the item into the house. Write the damage on the delivery note and keep a copy. Also note the driver's name and the vehicle number.
Still, do not sign a clean delivery note before inspection. A signature can be treated as confirmation that the item arrived in good condition.
A furniture delivery checklist for Nairobi and Nakuru
First, measure the route. Then ask for door delivery or pickup. Get the quote in writing. Check the carrier's liability limit. Also insure or declare high-value items. Photograph before loading. Inspect before signing. Then keep the delivery note and the driver's details.
If you have not bought yet, compare sellers on the Looking For feed. Then ask each one for the delivery cost to your exact address before you choose. The services page shows how Twynon handles a bulky item from listing to handover.

FAQ
How long does furniture delivery from Nairobi to Nakuru take?
It depends on the carrier and the route. Ask for a written transit time and confirm whether the item goes directly or through a depot. Do not assume same-day delivery for intercity furniture.
Who pays if the furniture arrives damaged?
It depends on the carrier's terms and the cover you bought. Report the damage immediately, photograph it, note it on the delivery note and start a claim within the carrier's window.
Is a pickup point cheaper than door delivery?
Often yes, but you need to collect the item yourself. Add the cost of a vehicle and helpers before you decide.
