Cheapest Courier in Kenya: What 4 Services Really Cost
Cheapest courier in Kenya quotes rarely match, because every service hides a different cost. Here is how to compare four options on one parcel without missing the extras.

5 November 2026 ยท 4 min readThe cheapest courier in Kenya is rarely the one with the lowest headline number. A bus counter, an agent point, a courier and a boda rider all quote differently. None of the four includes the trip your recipient makes to collect. So compare them on one parcel, and look for the cost that the quote leaves out.
The same parcel, four ways
Take one 2 kg parcel from Nairobi to Nakuru. Every figure below is a snapshot, so ask for a current quote.
First, bus counters are the oldest and usually the cheapest. Modern Coast has been reported at about KES 200 for an envelope and KES 400 for 2 kg. ENA has been reported at about KES 250 for 1 to 7 kg. Easy Coach advertises about KES 300 for 0 to 7 kg, same day or within 24 hours. All three are counter to counter, so someone drops the parcel and someone collects it.
Next come the agent networks. Pickup Mtaani has 150 or more points. Rates have been seen around KES 70 to 200 agent to agent, and about KES 120 from the CBD. Those figures are indicative. You save money, and your recipient spends time.
Couriers are the door to door option. Within Nairobi, same day delivery is advertised from about KES 350 for bookings before 11 am, up to 30 kg. Nairobi to Nakuru is advertised next morning from about KES 650. You pay for the door and a reference number.
Boda services are the fourth. Bolt Send quotes in the app. It takes parcels up to 15 kg that fit in the boot or on the passenger seat. Sender and recipient must both meet the driver. There is no door to door, and Bolt's terms say Bolt is not responsible for loss, theft or damage.
The hidden costs nobody quotes
Packaging is the first cost. A bus counter will refuse a parcel in a flimsy bag, and a courier may charge for a box. Buy a proper box or bag before you travel.
Weight is the second. Counters price by bracket, so 2 kg and 7 kg can cost the same while 8 kg jumps. Couriers price by weight and sometimes by volume, so a light but bulky item can cost more than a heavy small one. That is why the lowest rate per kilo can still lose on volume.
Distance is the third. A quote from KES 350 is a city centre number. A pickup in Kitengela and a drop in Kikuyu is a different quote.
Waiting and returns are the fourth. If nobody answers at the drop point, the rider waits and then leaves. You pay for the return trip. Bus parcels that are never collected sit at the counter and can attract storage charges.
Finally, count your recipient's time. A counter to counter parcel can mean two matatu trips and half a day. Add that fare, and the cheap option stops being cheap.
When the cheapest courier is a false saving
A KES 200 envelope is a good deal for documents and a bad deal for an expensive phone. The counter gives you a receipt and hope. There is no declared value and no screening. If the parcel disappears between the counter and the bus, there is no compensation either.
Cheap also fails when the item is urgent. A KES 300 bus parcel and a KES 650 courier differ by one day. If that day matters to you, the courier is cheaper. The same logic holds for fragile items, because a broken item costs more than any delivery fee.
Then there is the record. Since 20 September 2026, Communications Authority conditions apply to digital couriers. Bolt, Uber, Glovo and Little must verify identity, record declared contents and keep records for KRA and police. A handwritten counter slip does not give you that. The Communications Authority publishes the licence conditions and the complaint route.
How to compare cheapest courier quotes fairly
Give every provider the same five facts: weight, dimensions, pickup landmark, drop landmark and the time it must arrive. Ask what the price includes and who pays for a return. Ask whether the recipient collects at a counter or signs at a door. Also, get the quote in a message so you can compare it later.
If a parcel goes missing, complain to the operator first. The Competition Authority of Kenya accepts consumer complaints through its e-services portal after that. Keep the receipt and the reference number.
Prices change, so treat every figure here as a starting point and ask for a current quote. Then check where the parcel is with our guide on how to track a parcel in Kenya.
Still looking for the item itself? Post your request on the Looking For feed and compare sellers before you book a courier. If you are moving something bulky, read the services overview first.

FAQ
Is a bus parcel always the cheapest courier in Kenya?
For light parcels on main routes, often yes. Add the recipient's fare and the missing cover, and it stops being the cheapest overall.
Can a parcel reach Nakuru the same day?
Sometimes. Bus parcels can arrive the same day if you catch an early departure. Couriers advertise next morning, so ask for the pickup time before you promise anything.
Do I have to declare what is inside?
Yes. Digital couriers must have senders declare contents and must screen parcels without opening them. A false declaration can get the parcel refused.
