Sofas in Nairobi: 7 easy checks before you pay

Buyers of sofas in Nairobi usually regret the ones chosen on looks alone. Check the frame, the foam and the fabric, then measure the doorway before you pay.

Most buyers of sofas in Nairobi regret one of two things: a weak frame or a tired foam. The fabric tells you very little about either. So sit down, turn the sofa over, and measure your doorway before you pay.

Where to shop for sofas in Nairobi

Home sales, workshops that build to order and shops that hold stock all sell sofas, and each route asks something different of you. Still, a home sale is cheapest and leaves no paper trail. A workshop gives you the size you want but takes weeks. A stocked shop lets you sit on the model today. Local listings on Facebook Marketplace are worth a look for second hand sofas, but inspect the frame in person. Also ask who carries the sofa inside, because delivery to the gate is not delivery to the sitting room.

Start with the frame

The frame carries every other part, so ask what it is made of. Hardwood and good softwood hold screws and stay stiff. Particle board and thin board flex under weight and fail at the corners. Knock on the side. A dull, solid sound is better than a hollow rattle. Then lift one end a few centimetres. If the whole sofa twists, the frame is loose. Look underneath for corner blocks, staples and screws. A frame joined with glue and screws outlives one held by staples alone.

Test the foam with your hands

First sit down and stay there for a few minutes. Good foam pushes back when you stand, while weak foam leaves a dip that stays. Press the seat with your palm and feel for the deck underneath. If you can reach the frame easily, the foam is thin and will flatten fast. Ask whether the foam is high density and whether the seat cushions can be replaced later. A sofa with replaceable cushions is easier to keep.

Match the fabric to your home

Also ask what the fabric is and how it should be cleaned. Textured weaves hide marks well in a busy living room, while smooth fabric looks sharp and shows every spill. Check a corner where the fabric folds, because loose threads and thin spots there mean early wear. Rub the surface with your thumb. If fibres lift easily, the fabric will pill. If you have children or pets, ask for a tight weave that can be wiped.

Do the sitting test properly

Sit in your normal position, not on the edge. Then check the seat depth. Your feet should reach the floor and your back should feel supported. Lean back and see whether the frame creaks. Sit in the middle and at both ends, because a good sofa feels the same at every point. Check the arm height against your shoulder. Finally, stand up and look at where you were sitting. A deep print that does not recover is a warning.

Ask about removable covers

Removable covers make a sofa last longer because you can wash them. Ask whether the covers come off, whether they are zipped and whether they are washable. Check the zips and the seams at the corners. Also ask if the covers can be replaced on their own. If the answer is no, plan for the fabric to be the first part to fail.

Measure the doorway and the lift

A sofa must pass your door before it can live in your house. Measure the door width and height, the corridor and the stairwell. Then measure the lift door too if you live in an apartment. Ask for the sofa size and whether the legs come off. Some sofas can be tilted through a door, while some cannot. Confirm the delivery charge and whether it includes carrying the sofa inside. If the seller cannot answer, ask them to measure while you wait.

Check the legs and the base

Then turn the sofa on its side if you can. Look at how the legs are fixed. Metal plates and bolts are stronger than screws driven straight into soft wood. Then check the base fabric underneath for tears, because a torn dust cover lets dust into the frame. Look for stains that suggest damp storage.

Compare prices on sofas in Nairobi

Ask three sellers for the same size in the same fabric, then compare the totals. Shops often quote delivery separately, so ask before you agree. A price that leaves out the covers, the delivery or the disposal of your old sofa is not the final cost. Most sofas built by Nairobi workshops are made to order, so ask how many weeks the build takes before you pay a deposit.

Common questions about sofas in Nairobi

Is a cheap sofa always a bad sofa?

Not always. A simple sofa with a strong frame and firm foam can cost less than a padded one with weak materials. Judge the parts, not the price tag.

How do I know if the foam is good?

Sit for several minutes, then stand. Good foam recovers quickly. Press the seat and feel for the frame underneath. Thin foam fails early.

Can a sofa be delivered through a small door?

Sometimes. Ask for the size with the legs removed and measure your door first. If it will not pass, choose a smaller model or one that comes apart.
