Buy shoes online in Kenya: 6 checks that save you

Buy shoes online and the only thing you cannot do is try them on. Everything else is checkable. These six steps replace the fitting room with evidence.

Buy shoes online and you accept one risk: no fitting room. Every other risk is removable. Length, width, sole wear and the return policy are all facts you can check before money moves.

Use these steps on any listing, whether it is a shop, a marketplace seller or a WhatsApp catalogue.

Measure your foot before you buy shoes

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, late in the day, then mark the longest toe. Measure both feet, because most people differ by a few millimetres. Add half a centimetre for socks and take the larger foot as your number.

Write the length and the width down. Width is the measurement buyers skip, and it is the reason a correct length still feels tight.

Compare the brand chart before you buy

Sizes are not universal. A European forty two in one brand is a different length in another. Open the brand size chart for the exact model and match your measured centimetres to the number.

Also read reviews that mention fit. Two or three comments about running small will tell you more than the chart, since charts describe the last, not your foot.

Ask for sole photos before you buy online

A listing photo from above hides the two areas that matter. Ask for a photo of the outsole tread and a close up of the stitching at the toe. Worn tread on the outer heel tells you the shoes were used heavily on one side.

Then look at the toe box shape. A collapsed toe box means the shoes were stored badly, and that crease does not come out. Therefore, judge the shape before the colour.

Check the shoe material and the lining

Real leather creases in fine lines and smells like leather. Synthetic creases in sharp folds and holds heat. Ask the seller which it is, and treat a vague answer as a synthetic answer.

Look inside the heel. A lining worn through at the heel cup causes blisters from the first walk. In addition, check the insole for compression marks, since a flattened insole cannot be repaired.

Confirm the return and exchange policy

Ask three questions in writing. Can I return them, in how many days, and who pays the return delivery. A seller who will not answer in writing is unlikely to honour an exchange later.

Save the answer as a screenshot. This single habit resolves most online shoe disputes in your favour.

Time the buy around delivery

Delivery times vary from same day in Nairobi to four days upcountry. If you need the shoes for an event, order with a week to spare, so an exchange is still possible. Ask the seller which courier they use, then check whether that courier calls before delivery. A courier who calls saves you a wasted afternoon.

Keep the outer box until the shoes are worn once. A boxed return looks unused, and that small detail decides whether an exchange is accepted. Fold the receipt inside the box, then store both together until the shoes have passed their first long walk.

Finally, pay through a channel with a record. Then open the parcel in front of the rider where possible, and try the shoes on the same hour they arrive.

buy shoes online by checking the outsole first

Measure once, compare the brand chart, inspect the sole and confirm returns. Do those four things and online shoe shopping stops being a gamble.
